I'm running on Windows 8.1 I'm not using an app or anything, just the good old desktop Steam.
I've tried running a few other Steam games (TF2 and Portal 2) and they've been able to run without difficulty. I haven't gotten an error message throughout this entire saga, so I'm quite confused. I checked the validity of the game cache but everything validated. The Steam bootstrapper and other processes would keep functioning as usual.

exe would flash in the task manager for a split second, then vanish. As soon as I hit play on the launcher, the game. I ran through this process again, but this time kept an eye on the task manager. But again, as soon as I hit play from the launcher, nothing would happen. I rebooted my computer in the hopes that maybe the DirectX installation was just being dumb. And again, got to the launcher, hit play, and then nothing. Confused, I tried to open the game again. I figured that I had to restart Steam in order for the new installation to take effect (it's been a long time since I had to do this process, so I didn't remember if this was a required step), and I closed out Steam, restarted it, and tried to play again. The installation finished, the dialogue box vanished, and then nothing happened. When I tried to play it today for the first time, I went through the DirectX first-time installation I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary happen.
So I finally got a half-decent gaming laptop and decided to play Batman: Arkham Asylum (I've seen a few gamplay videos and have always wanted to play it, but didn't have the means to). Yet another one of these threads, I know! But I'd appreciate any help I could get!
